Lately, I have seen many articles and blog posts about CBD Oil. No doubt, the health benefits that were mentioned are all very consistent. But what I want to share here is understanding of the words, terms or the scientific terms used. When words like hemp oil, cannabis oil and marijuana came up in the articles, among others, it got more complicated and I am confused. Are you? Worry not. I will explain in simple terms - What is CBD Oil? And also, what is the difference between CBD Oil and Hemp Oil? Knowing this, you will benefit by choosing the BEST CBD Oil and rest assured, you pay for what’s worth.
What is CBD Oil
Let’s start by getting to know the main source, which is the plant.
Cannabis is a tall plant with a stiff upright stem, divided serrated leaves and glandular hairs.
They are three recognizable species, namely, Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica and Cannabis ruderalis.
Marijuana and hemp are plants too. Both are the same plants of the Cannabis sativa species. However, industrial hemp is always a strain of Cannabis sativa, while marijuana can be Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica or Cannabis ruderalis.
Industrial hemp is specifically produced and the amount of psychoactive substances is at the minimal, no more than 0.3% of THC.
Now, let’s talk about the compounds found in the plant.
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CDB) are two types out of over 85 cannabinoids found naturally in the Cannabis sativa plant. Both of these are the main active cannabinoids.
Cannabinoids are a group of chemical compounds that interact with different receptors in your body to produce a wide range of effects.
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the main psychoactive component and responsible for creating the “high” feeling and hallucination.
On the other hand, cannabidiol (CDB) does NOT create such an effect. It is NOT psychoactive. Although CBD has the same chemical formula as THC, the atoms are arranged differently. For this reason, CBD is often used in the treatment of various conditions without the typical intoxicating effects of THC.
Are you keeping up with the terms? Now comes another confusing part.
What is the Difference between CBD Oil and Hemp Oil
It is important to know how to distinguish between the two. Both CBD oil and Hemp Oil may be similar in a way but there are important differences to note.
Firstly, let’s see what is
The same
CBD oil and Hemp oil are produced from the hemp plant also known as industrial hemp. Unlike marijuana, as mentioned earlier, industrial hemp is specifically produced to contain no more than 0.3% of THC.
Now, look at
The differences
Their Source
CBD oil is made from the flowers, leaves and stalks of the hemp plant.
Hemp oil is made from the seeds of the plant.
Take note of these terms
- • Hemp oil
- • CBD Hemp oil
Hemp oil is actually Hemp seed oil. It is NOT the same as CBD Hemp oil.
Therefore, you must NOT be confused by some unscrupulous sellers trying to market their Hemp oil products for its medicinal value.
CDB oil and CDB Hemp oil are the same. These terms are used interchangeably depending on the marketing companies. Having said so, please do not take it for granted. You must always check the ingredients listed on the product label.
Their Chemical Compound
While Hemp (seed) oil is produced from the seeds of the hemp plant, it does not mean that it is of no significant value. Although its CBD level is low at less than 25 parts per million, it contains essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals which can be found in many other healthy oils.
And what does CBD oil contains? Yes, you are correct – it is CBD!
Not all hemp is created equal. Thus, CBD oil may contain between 3% and 25% CBD.
Now you know that Hemp Seed oil and CBD Hemp oil are from a different source, seeds vs plant, you can understand why the chemical compounds of both oils are different as well.
Let’s proceed to find out
Their Effects on Your Body
A little bit of human body science lesson here.
Mentioned earlier, cannabinoids are a group of chemical compounds that interact with different receptors in your body to produce a wide range of effects.
To dive down further - In your brain, there are natural cannabinoids and cannabinoids receptors. These cannabinoids regulate communications between the neurons. When externally ingested cannabinoids, in this case, cannabinoids from the cannabis plant enters your system, it will trigger your endocannabinoid system causing hundreds, possibly thousands of positive and negative effects.
If the cannabinoids contain too much THC, you will experience “high” and hallucinations. But with CBD, you will experience less pain because it suppresses your pain receptors.
Are you still with me? Can you see what CBD can do to your body?
In simple words.
Both CBD oil and Hemp seed oil have low levels of THC but different levels of CBD. For this reason, they will have different effects on your body.
CBD oil - the high level of CBD triggers your body system to react, converting the compound into a medical treatment for pain and other health problems.
CBD has a direct impact on your biological system. Hence, it can help you with a variety of medical conditions.
Hemp seed oil – the low level of CBD will not be able to affect the cannabinoids receptors and thus does not have any medicinal value.
Are you good to continue? All the confusing parts are covered. So, the following will be an easy read.
Quickly, let’s see the difference in

Hi Sharon. Thanks for clearing up some of the confusion surrounding this subject. I do have a question. Without going in to detail let’s just say in my younger days I developed an allergy to marijuana. Symptoms similar to those allergic to peanuts or strawberries. Very unpleasant. Of course I swore off the herb. I realize you’re not a medical professional but, in your opinion, do you think I’m allergic to the THC or to the hemp plant itself? Just wondering if I might have a reaction to CBD oil? Thanks again for a great article.
Hi Joel,
Now, you and I understand the difference, don’t we? In my herbs and spices quest, I find this subject very interesting and just so you know, before this, I clicked away whenever the word marijuana was mentioned. And here I am finding out the matter and sharing it.
Your question refers. Yes, you are absolutely correct, I am no medical professional and merely sharing my findings. Thus, I am going to explain my understanding of the matter in layman terms.
CBD oil is made from the hemp plant. Hemp plant and marijuana come from the same cannabis plant that is Cannabis sativa. Obviously, marijuana contains THC but hemp planted are produced to contain less than 0.3% THC.
Without knowing the actual fact/diagnosis of your allergy. I will not be able to advise. There are many components in the hemp plant itself and you may be allergic to other substances found in it. It may be THC or other compounds.
The best possible advice is to consult a professional practitioner before consuming CBD Oil.
As we grow older, our body reacts differently. My daughter used to be allergic to seafood and peanuts. As you said, not pleasant. But now in her teenage years, she can cope.
I sincerely hope you are able to find out the best solution. Should you have further queries, you know where to reach me.
Thanks for dropping by and wish you well. Take care!
Sharon
I do understand the difference much better after reading your post, so many people I am sure are confused about CBD oil products. I just read many of the dishonest companies are selling products which are not what they claim to be, so what company would you recommend I check for a high quality CBD oil product.
Jeff
Hello Jeff. I am glad this article cleared the confusion.
Not all companies are selling good quality CBD oil products. On the other hand, there are many companies selling high-quality products.
Personally, I am with CTFO – Change The Future Outcome. Why? Because they use hemp from farms that produce the richest, CBD Hemp in the USA. Also, they use CO2 extraction method to extract the oil ensuring it is of the highest grade. This extraction method maintains the quality of the oil.
Furthermore, CTFO has a very clear Vision, Mission and core values.
