Tips for Growing Herbs in Pots without Drainage Holes

Water. It is best to have drainage holes to allow water to seep out of the pots after watering. This ensures the water does NOT pool at the base, protecting roots from rotting, fungus and bacteria.

This does not mean you cannot grow herbs in the decorative planters recommended here. They are too beautiful not to have.

To overcome this, you need to water sparingly and slowly so that the water distributes evenly through the soil without becoming stagnant at the bottom. You can create a drainage layer by adding pebbles or pumice to the bottom of the pot before adding soil. This allows water to get out of the soil more quickly and away from the roots.

Keep forgetting to water your hanging plants? Or you prefer hassle-free? You may choose to use the self-watering hanging planters. Alternatively, use a plastic pot with a drainage hole that is slightly smaller than the planter to grow your herbs. Simply set the pot inside the planter.

Medium. The drainage can be improved further by mixing potting soil with pumice.

Pumice creates spaces in potting mediums for water and air. Fill the pot with a mixture of 2 parts potting soil with 1 part pumice.

Light. Find the best spot to hang your planter. At a shady spot, the soil is not able to dry out properly thus causing root rot. Well, near a window sill is the best spot.

That's all for now. Happy Growing! Please share and comment.

Your macrame suggestions are really pretty and will fit nearly any decor of your house.

The ceramic ones are also looking nice. A good tip to put some rocks or charcoal as plants normally do not like to have their roots wet constantly.
