UPDATED SEPTEMBER 15, 2020
When a recipe called for ground spices and what you have is in the whole form, what would you do? Skip that recipe even though you like it. Or quickly buy the ground spices? Or take out your mortar and pestle, add a bit of elbow grease. Honestly, I may probably skip that recipe. But you don’t have to do so. Get yourself an electric spice grinder!
While a mortar and pestle can do a good job grinding spices in small amount, you will need a spice grinder to speed up the process for a bigger batch.
There are many similar versions of spice grinder in the market. Most of them are marketed as Electric Coffee and Spice Grinder.
Is coffee grinder the same as spice grinder? Yes, it is. But you do not want to use your existing coffee grinder to grind your spices. Why? You do not want cross-contamination of flavours. I love cinnamon coffee but not cumin coffee. Do you know what I mean? Oh, I can accept nutmeg though.
Browsing through Amazon, I have compiled a list of coffee and spice grinders for you. Shortlisted based on their ratings and customer reviews. I hope from this list, you can find the best electric spice grinder that suits your needs.
Before looking at the individual products, I like to sum it up now so that it will be easier and faster for YOU to choose your little kitchen helper.
Overall
I want you to know that electric spice grinders have similar product specifications and functions. The 3 key differences that you should note are
1. Motor power
Typically, the power range from 150 to 250W. The more powerful it is, the faster and more efficient the grinding process. But keep in mind, the noise level may be higher. Let’s see this in the review below.
2. Grinding bowl - detachable or non-detachable
The detachable bowl is easier to use. Simply detach to pour out the ground spices and wash the bowl without worrying water seeping into the motor.
However, washing the non-detachable bowl is not that difficult because you are not grinding wet ingredients. Simply clean the bowl with a brush (if included in the package) or toothbrush and give it a good wipe with a damp kitchen towel. Here is a clean your grinder tip.
3. Bowl capacity
Range from 60 to 90g. Depends how much you are grinding per batch. Ground spices can keep for up to 6 months but why would you want to keep them for so long? They are BEST used when fresh – obtain the maximum potency of the spices.
Otherwise, the grinder dimensions are more or less the same with a slight difference of about one or two inches in height and diameter/width.
All grinders have stainless steel grinding bowl and blades. While the bowl can and some unit cannot be detached, the blades are non-detachable, unlike the conventional blenders.
Most grinders have one-touch ON/OFF button by pressing a button or the lid itself. Press the lid to ON. Release to OFF. Also, the grinder cover is mostly transparent. Some are clearly see-through and others semi-transparent because of its colour.
The key differences are what you really want to look at when choosing your grinder. Of course, the design matters too. For me, it does. It is a matter of personal preference 😉

Spice Grinder Review
1. VEKEN Electric Coffee, Spice & Nut Grinder
Rated #1 New Release in Electric Coffee Grinders, 4.6 out of 5 stars with 208 customer reviews.
Product Specs
Motor power: 150W
Grinding bowl: Non-detachable
Capacity: 50g
Dimensions: 6.6 x 3.75 x 3.75 inches
Good to have features. The power cord can be detached and stored conveniently when not in use. If you may, take a closer look at its splash-proof cover. The fully embedded cover prevents the ingredients from splashing out and the transparent top allows you to watch the grinding process.
Overall. This is the most basic grinder you can get for a mere $20. As with any other spice grinders, the stainless steel blade offers durability and efficient grinding. You may grind your walnut or almond using this grinder too. Its compact design allows you to store at any corner, inside or out, without utilizing much space.
Cons. The downside will be the non-detachable bowl and its capacity is rather small at 50g. If you are only using it occasionally, I don’t feel that this is much of an issue. Simply grind a second batch in no time. Oh, there is a free cleaning brush included.
2. MUELLER AUSTRIA Electric Coffee, Spice and Nut Grinder
Rated #1 Best Seller in Electric Coffee Blade Grinders, 4.5 out of 5 stars with 1037 customer reviews.
Motor Power: 120W

Product Dimensions: 7.8 x 4.4 x 4.3 inches
Good to have features. The transparent top to easily see the result of the grind.
Overall. A simple electrical kitchen tool to do a simple job of grinding spices for a mere $20.
Cons. This grinder looks plasticky. Hope this does not bother you. The power at 120W may be a bit low compared to other grinders in this review. Well, you do not need that much power to grind spices. Moreover, if you are only grinding occasionally.
3. KRUPS Electric Spice and Coffee Grinder
Rated Amazon’s Choice, 4 out of 5 stars with 15,867 customer reviews.
Motor power: 200W
Grinding bowl: Non-detachable
Capacity: 85g
Product Dimensions: 6.75 x 3.5 x 3 inches
Good to have features. Large capacity for a small grinder which stands at 6.75 inches. Fits well in the kitchen.
Overall. Krups is a popular brand for coffee makers and grinders. This grinder was first listed on Amazon since April 26, 2000, almost 20 years. In total, received 15,867 customer reviews (as at this spice grinder review published date). However, after reading through several pages of the reviews, I found that the reviews were actually combined with other products featured on the same page that is Burr Grinder, Auto Dose Grinder with Scale and Grind and Brew Coffee Maker. Nonetheless, this 200W KRUPS Electric Spice and Coffee Grinder is a fairly good buy at ±$20.
Cons. A short power cord. You may need to use an extension cord.
4. AICOK Electric Coffee & Spice Grinder
Rated 4.4 out of 5 stars with 246 customer reviews.
Motor Power: 200W
Grinding Bowl: Detachable
Capacity: 65g
Product Dimensions: 9.7 x 5.8 x 5.5 inches
Good to have features. Build-in smart overheat protection.
Overall. The sleek design looks great sitting on your kitchen counter. This is the biggest among the 8 spice grinders reviewed here. The removable grinding bowl plus a powerful motor say that this is a fairly good buy at ±$25.
Cons. This grinder is loud but with a 200W motor power, you will finish grinding pretty fast.
5. EPICA Electric Coffee & Spice Grinder
Rated 4.2 out of 5 stars with 2262 customer reviews.
Motor power: 250W – strongest motor on the market
Grinding bowl: Detachable
Capacity: 70g
Product Dimensions: 7 x 3 x 3 inches
Good to have features. Large activation button for extra comfort. The cord storage at the bottom of the grinder allows you to stow extra wire neatly out of sight. On top of that, the anti-skid feet keep it firmly in place.
Overall. The strongest motor for a spice grinder on the market and the bowl is removable. Does this Epica Coffee & Spice Grinder deserve an asking price of ±$25? I think it is a pretty good buy. The extra features add value to its price.
Cons. The motor was powerful but does it mean durable as well? There were several comments that it didn’t last longer than a year and mostly caused by overheating. This small kitchen helper is not a conventional blender and thus you must remember to pulse the device to prevent overheating.
6. CUISINART Electric Spice & Nut Grinder
Rated 3.9 out of 5 stars with 728 customer reviews.
Motor power: 200W
Grinding bowl: Detachable
Capacity: 90g
Product Dimensions: 9 x 6 x 5 inches
Good to have features. The removable stainless steel bowl comes with a storage lid that allows you to store extra spices in the grinding bowl itself. The non-slip rubber feet ensure the unit does not slide along your kitchen counter while grinding.
Overall. Read the name of this product again. Coffee was not mentioned. This grinder is specially designed for spice and nut grinding. Standing at 9 inches in height and 5 inches in width, this is one of two bigger spice grinder reviewed here, retailing at ±$35.
Cons. There were several complaints about the grinding bowl not completely sealed where the blade passes through the bottom of the bowl. This causes the finer ground to end up on top of the grinder housing.
7. SHARDOR Electric Coffee & Spice Grinder
Rated #1 Best Seller in Electric Spice Grinder, 4.8 out of 5 stars with 74 customer reviews.
Product Specs
Motor power: 200W
Grinding bowl: Detachable
Capacity: 70g
Dimensions: 8 x 3.7 x 3.7 inches
Good to have features. There are 2 removable stainless steel bowls. One with 2-blades for dry grinding such as coffee bean, spices and nuts. The other with 4-blades is for wet grinding, for instance, garlic and basil.
Overall. This may be pricier at ±$35 but considering the 2 removable stainless steel bowls, it is a fairly good buy. Its lid-activated switch makes it easy to operate. Simply press down longer to get a finer grind. However, do not overdo it else you will overheat the blade or motor. When grinding spices always remember to pulse the device. Overheating can leech away the flavour from your spices.
Cons. Although the bowl can be removed from the base, the blades are not removable from the bowl. Thus, it may be a bit trying to clean the 4-blades bowl after grinding wet ingredients. Imagine parsley, basil or garlic. It depends on how often you grind wet ingredients.
Non-significant tool but 2 in 1 brush and spoon is included.
8. KITCHENAID Coffee & Spice Grinder
Rated 3.6 out of 5 stars with 466 customer reviews.
Motor power: 160W
Grinding bowl: Detachable
Capacity: 4oz
Product Dimensions: 8.8 x 3.8 x 3.8 inches
Good to have features. You will get 2 stainless steel grinding bowls that come with lids. 2 airtight storage tops and 1 shaker top. The clear cover of this grinder allows you to easily see the consistency of the grinds.
Overall. This KitchenAid grinder is very similar to the Shardor grinder. Both come with 2 detachable bowls. Shardor is more powerful at 200W compared to KitchenAid’s 160W. The extras that KitchenAid has is the airtight lids for easy storage. The question is, will you be storing your ground spices or use them straight away?
Both KitchenAid and Shardor have the same price tag ±$35.
Cons. A noisy grinder. This was brought up in one of the customer reviews. Then again, will you be grinding spices early morning? If coffee, yes.

Was it easy to search for a decent spice grinder? I say it was not as easy as you and I would think. Browsing through the Amazon site itself, I found a big number of electric coffee and spice grinders. Reliable grinder or not but definitely there are many sub-par grinders out there.

From the Corner of My Home – Spice Up Your Life with Herbs and Spices
I love my spices and always use my electric grinder. I don’t care about the noise and I have a 250W. Reason being I would rather have a faster and more efficient grinding machine. However, if I was on a budget I would hands down go for the VEKEN ELECTRIC COFFEE, SPICE & NUT GRINDER as it is affordable but does the job well done. Love it, thanks for the thorough review!
Love your spices. That’s good! I have to agree with you, Brandon, that having one with a higher power make things faster thus the noise is secondary.
